25 years after their last appearance, the New York Cosmos Football (or 'soccer') team have been reformed. Known for their wild personality as a club they attracted big names on and off the pitch, one such name is Pele, who has become the club's honorary president.
In a recent interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Pele recalls the hype surrounding the club, "When we started to win, we had a really big bunch of names in the crowd: movie stars, sports stars, pop stars, politicians, artists... Robert Redford, Muhammad Ali and Mick Jagger all came. Andy Warhol, Elton John, Henry Kissinger too-every game, there was someone there. It was fantastic."
To celebrate their return, the original club's kit supplier Umbro has singed a deal to provide something special. The new kit is a clear inspiration of the originals with a distinct retro style but the manufacturing quality of a modern kit.
Umbro's chief marketing officer Trevor Cairns explains his excitement, "Umrbo was a partner of the New York Cosmos during the 1970s when they were unquestionably the world's coolest football club".
The revival of the club was announced in August 2010, 33 years to the day of Pele's last match with the club and of his career. The club is not only committed to bringing back a once great football team but also helping to improve the future of football. The focus will be on significant investment in grassroots and youth football, with the provision of an elite training program and opportunities for talented youngsters.
The Club's new kit is a clear retro design, with original colouring and styling of the old version, but with a modern cut. The kit is manufactured out of a high tech polyester mix which reduces overheating and wicks away perspiration. It is on sale this season.
The new kit is of similar retro design to the highly anticipated umbro speciali boots. Umbro have also sought after the contract for the Liverpool football shirt despite the current condition of the club.
